FLOWERY BRANCH - A trip to DisneyWorld of the Flowery Branch High School Chorus is officially "off," one week after Hall County school board members raised questions about it.
The board expressed concern about the cost of the trip and the pressure it would put on parents and students to raise money for it in these tough economic times.
Flowery Branch Principal Mark Coleman said Monday he has rescinded the request.
"I feel like that as principal, I should have been a little more sensitive to the issues that our superintendent and our board...are dealing with," Coleman said, "and, probably should neve have submitted it in the first place. "
Coleman said 75-80 chorus members had been expected to make the trip... at a cost of about $500 each, which parents and students would have had to raise.
He added he is also sensitive to what students and their families are facing, economically, "and is no way should we put extra pressure on our students to raise money."
Last Monday, school board member Nath Morris was among those raising questions about such a trip at this time.
"We're hearing from a lot of people in the community," Morris said. "They said they're being asked all the time for money, and we understand. If you multiply 75 kids times needing to come up with $500 each, that's a lot of money they're asking."
