Allen foils Commerce comeback

By staff reports
COMMERCE -- Jefferson's Zach Allen blocked a 32-yard field goal as time expired to preserve the Dragons' thrilling 17-14 win over arch-rival Commerce on Friday in their annual Jackson County battle.

After a scoreless first half, Jefferson looked to take control of the game with 10 straight third quarter points on a 26-yard field goal from Asher Orr and a 7-yard touchdown run from Drequn Sewell.

Commerce, however, answered back with a 13-yard scoring run from quarterback Cody Streetman to cut the lead to 17-6. Jefferson appeared to put the game away with 8:25 left on a 1-yard TD run from Bryant Shirreffs for a 17-6 lead.

The Tigers would get going. Streetman capped a quick drive with his second TD of the game to make it 17-14 and then the Commerce held Jefferson three-and-out and got the ball back at its own 3 with just under four minutes left.

The Tigers drove down to the Jefferson 25 with two seconds remaining to set up a potential game-tying field goal but Allen spoiled their comeback.

Commerce won the battle of the stats. Streetman finished with 185 yards on 32 carries as the Tigers racked up 280 yards of total offense.

Jefferson had just 185 yards of offense, paced by 66 yards from Chris Jackson.

Jefferson will travel to North Hall next week, while Commerce travels to face Franklin County.
