Newcomers Club celebrates 50th anniversary

GAINESVILLE - The largest woman's club in Hall County celebrated its 50th anniversary Wednesday at the Chattahoochee Country Club.

The Gainesville Newcomers Club's most recent past-president Cheryl Tefft said the group was founded in 1959 when the area was coming into its own as the "poultry capital of the world."

"John Jacobs, who was the owner of WDUN and also the monthly newspaper The Tribune, recognized the need to incorporate into the community the 30 to 40 families who were moving in on a monthly basis," she said.

Tefft said helping Jacobs to form the Club were Clara Martin and Malissa Tubbs. All were honored Wednesday along with the club's past presidents.
