Ellijay woman dies in fire

ELLIJAY - Authorities say a wheelchair-bound Ellijay woman died in a home fire that was likely caused by careless smoking.

Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John Oxendine says 66-year-old Laura Shiflett died of smoke inhalation in the Sunday afternoon fire.

Oxendine says the fire, which was reported around 3:50 p.m., didn't spread beyond the home's bedroom and extinguished itself.
