ATLANTA - The number of Georgians filing first-time claims for unemployment insurance was up last month from June by five percent. However, the number was down 28 percent from a year ago.
State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond says most of the first-time claims were filed in manufacturing, wholesale and retail trade, administrative and support services, and construction.
In metro Gainesville, the decline was 30 pecent while in Athens it was 25 percent and in Atlanta 28.
Columbus led the state in the drop in the number of first time unemployment insurance claims... with a 34 percent drop.
