Gainesville leads state in job losses

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
ATLANTA - The number of jobs that were lost in Gainesville between July 2009 and last month totaled 1.5 percent of the work force... biggest percentage loss in the state. Meanwhile, the state's unemployment rate is down.

In raw numbers, the number of jobs lost in metro Gainesville during the 12 months ending July 2010 totaled 1,100. Brunswick (1.4%, 7,600 jobs); Dalton (1.4%, 900 jobs); Atlanta (.5%, 10,100 jobs); and Columbus, .3%, 400) rounded out the top five

As for job gains, Augusta (4,700 - a 2.3% increase); Rome (800, 2.1%)); Warner Robins (600, 1%); Albany (400, .7%); and Savannah (900, .6%)) led the way.

Statewide, Georgia lost 30,400 jobs between July 2009 and last month - a .8% decrease.

UNEMPLOYMENT RATE

The state Department of Labor reports a slight decline in the state's unemployment rate as the number of people who stopped looking for work increased.

Labor Department officials announced the figures on Thursday and said the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell from 10 percent in June to 9.9 percent in July.

Commissioner Michael Thurmond says the rate dipped mostly because the state's labor force shrank by 21,043 from June to July, as long-term unemployed workers became discouraged and gave up their job search.

If you are out of work and looking for a job or maybe have a job and are thinking about changing, the labor department is helping host a job fair, along with the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce from 1:00-5:00 this afternoon at the Georgia Mountains Center in Gainesville.
