ATLANTA - Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp has certified the results of the state's Aug. 10 runoff.
The official results announced today show Nathan Deal defeated fellow Republican Karen Handel by just 2,519 votes out of more than 579,000 ballots cast.
Under Georgia law, Handel, the former secretary of state, could have asked for a recount since the margin between the two was less than 1 percent. Instead she threw her support behind Deal, an ex-congressman from Gainesville.
Kemp certified results for 23 primary races, including four U.S. House races.
In other statewide races, Sam Olens defeated Preston Smith for the GOP nomination for attorney general. And Ralph Hudgens beat Maria Sheffield in the Republican race for insurance commissioner.
CONGRESSIONAL RACES
The certified results show Tom Graves defeating Lee Hawkins for the 9th District Congressional seat by 7,903 votes and Rob Woodall defeating Jody Hise for the 7th District post by 8,561 votes.
In White County, meanwhile, a recount is scheduled this afternoon in a county commission race. Former commission chairman Chris Nonnemaker requested the recount after results last Tuesday night showed Craig Bryant beating him by just 12 votes.
