GAINESVILLE -- The first week of March 2010 was an energizing breather for Brenau University swimmer Julia Ferreira. There was, as usual, a hefty lineup of labor to tackle. But with spring break in effect, Ferreira and her Tiger teammates could at least leave the mental strain of textbooks in their wake and focus exclusively on the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) swimming championships -- which took place in St. Peters, Mo., March 5-6.
The national meet and the preceding Appalachian Conference meet proved defining events for Ferreira. The Golden Tigers standout, both individually and with teammates, broke two Brenau records at Nationals to go with the four records she smashed at the conference meet in Huntington, W.Va., two weeks prior.
In Huntington, Ferreira set an individual record in the 200-yard individual medley (2:21.00) and, with a handful of teammates, she set new marks in the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.93), 800 freestyle (8:32.00), and 400 medley relays (4:19.62). Additionally, she finished second in both the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke events, clocking in at 1:10.00 and 2:36.00, respectively.
At the national meet, Ferreira reset another Golden Tiger record by completing the 200 medley derby within 2:21.48. She then played a role on a four-member team that finished the 400-yard medley in an unprecedented time of 4:11.68.
Ferreira admits the many ripples she has triggered in the Brenau history books are not lost on her. In fact, she operates on a self-embedded, ever-insatiable hunger to improve upon her standards.
