Spurrier says Gamecock tight end met with NCAA

By The Associated Press
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier says tight end Weslye Saunders was the player who the NCAA spoke with about possible violations.

Spurrier says he does not know what was discussed in Saunders' conversation with the NCAA or what the potential violations are.

Saunders would not discuss his conversations with the NCAA when reached by phone Monday.

On Sunday, athletic director Eric Hyman said the school has been contacted by the NCAA about a possible violation in one of its programs.

Saunders is a 6-foot-5, 280 pound senior from Durham, N.C. He was South Carolina's third-leading receiver last season with a career-best 32 catches and three touchdowns. Saunders decided to play his senior season rather than jump to the NFL.
