4 recruits sue Savannah St. for discrimination

By The Associated Press
SAVANNAH -- Four white football players recruited by Savannah State University's former coach say in a lawsuit the historically black college denied them scholarships because of their race.

The lawsuit filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Atlanta says coach Robby Wells offered scholarships to the players before he was fired in January. It says Savannah State pulled the scholarship offers after Wells left.

It was unclear if offers were rescinded for any of Wells' other recruits. It's not uncommon for schools to release recruits from scholarships after a coach's departure.

Wells, who was Savannah State's first white football coach, filed his own discrimination lawsuit in May.

Savannah State spokeswoman Loretta Heyward declined comment Wednesday. The attorney for the recruits did not immediately return phone calls.
