ATLANTA - Democrat Roy Barnes has raked in the most cash in the race for governor, but Republican John Oxendine has more in the bank heading into the July 20 primary.
Barnes reported on Thursday that he's raised $1.3 million in the last quarter, beating all the candidates in the 14-person field who've reported so far. The former governor has raised almost $5 million since entering the race last spring.
But Barnes has also been spending heavily on a barrage of television advertising and has $1.15 million cash on hand.
Oxendine - the state's insurance commissioner - has $1.8 million left in the bank. Oxendine is running television ads but entered the airwaves later than Barnes.
Oxendine was barred from raising money for most of April because the state Legislature was meeting. But he raised $869,550 in the last two months and has brought in almost $4 million since entering the race in 2008.
Barnes and Oxendine have been the steady money leaders in their respective primary races. Although not all the candidates had reported their fundraising hauls late Thursday it seemed unlikely that any would catch them.
Among Republicans:
- Nathan Deal raised more than $569,000 for the most recent quarter. The former congressman from Gainesville said Thursday he has a little more than $642,976 cash on hand.
- Former Secretary of State Karen Handel raised more than $430,000 in the quarter and had over $665,000 in the bank.
- Eric Johnson, former state president pro tempore of the state Senate, had yet to report his fundraising totals.
The other leading Democrats - including Attorney General Thurbert Baker - also had not yet reported their tallies.
The deadline to file campaign finance disclosure reports with the state Ethics Commission is midnight Thursday.
