Gamecocks' Tanner national coach of the year

By The Associated Press
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- South Carolina coach Ray Tanner has picked up another honor after his team's College World Series victory.

Tanner has been named national coach of the year by Collegiate Baseball. The Gamecocks finished No. 1 in the publication's final rankings after beating UCLA twice this week in Omaha, Neb.

Tanner earned the Order of the Palmetto from Gov. Mark Sanford on Thursday. That is the state's highest civilian honor. The city of Columbia plans to honor Tanner and the Gamecocks with a parade Friday.

It is the first national championship for any men's team in South Carolina athletic history.
