Troubled Jefferson Police Department rebuilds

By The Associated Press
JEFFERSON - The Georgia Association of Police Chiefs is recognizing the long-troubled Jefferson Police Department for rebuilding its reputation.

The department is getting a Georgia Association of Police Chiefs state certification. Only about 100 of the state's more than 700 law enforcement agencies have completed the rebuilding process, which requires departments' operating policies meet certain standards.

Authorities fired former Chief Darren Glenn in 2006 amid a two-year Georgia Bureau of Investigation probe into alleged corruption in the police department.

A grand jury indicted Glenn on charges of theft and invasion of privacy, but a judge later dismissed the case.

Chief Joe Wirthman says the department has worked to update filing systems and rewrite police policy.
