Napolitano: Obama seeking immigration overhaul

By The Associated Press
DENVER - Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is assuring Hispanic political leaders from around the country that the Obama administration is committed to overhauling federal immigration laws.

Napolitano blames the lack of a new law on a bitterly divided Congress. She says the country needs the overhaul now.

She spoke in Denver on Thursday at the annual conference of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials, which represents more than 6,000 political leaders.

Napolitano highlighted President Barack Obama's effort to make it easier for legal immigrants to become citizens. She says Obama has taken a tough approach to securing the U.S.-Mexican border.

She did not mention Arizona's tough new immigration law.
