Van wreck couple doing well after surgery

By Ken Stanford
LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Gainesville couple, injured Wednesday when their church van collided with a truck in Kentucky, was resting well late Thursday afternoon after undergoing surgery.

Terry and Lois Taphouse were the most seriously injured of those on the Belmont Baptist Church van.

Church member Steve Moon, who is now in Kentucky with the mission group the Taphouses were a part of, says Lois Taphouse was operated on for a broken hip.

"They got her hip set (but) they are going to have to go in and put some kind of plate in probably next week."

As for Terry Taphouse, Moon says doctors were able to save his leg but, he, too, faces more surgery. "They got some sort of 'halo' mechanism over it and they are going to have to go in Monday or Tuesday and set some pins in it."

Moon says doctors expect the Taphouses to be in the hospital for at least two weeks "but they are doing great. The doctors are encouraging us and things are looking good for their recovery."

The accident happened on Kentucky Highway 92 near Williamsburg when a tractor-trailer crossed the centerline and struck the van almost head-on. The van, which was driven by Terry Taphouse with his wife, Lois, in the other front seat, was one of two from Gainesville ferrying members of three churches on a mission trip to Appalachia.

In addition to Belmont, Walnut Fork Baptist Church (Hall County) and North Metro Baptist Church (Gwinnett County) were also participating.
