Feds step up mortgage fraud prosecution

By The Associated Press
ATLANTA - Federal prosecutors in north Georgia are stepping up efforts to crack down on mortgage fraud.

The Justice Department announced this week that investigators have made nearly 500 arrests since March in a major crackdown on mortgage fraud, and several of them were made in north Georgia.

U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates says the frauds are taking different forms. She says sometimes they are steered by crooked closing attorneys, brokers and appraisers, while others are plotted by straw buyers or straw sellers.

She said prosecutors are starting to use "sting operations" at the closing tables.

She says: "We hope to have the kind of impact on the crooks as they have had on our citizens and our neighborhoods."
