Parade cancelled but other events go on

GAINESVILLE - Gainesville's Memorial Day Parade was cancelled because of the weather but a number of other holiday activities remained on schedule.

The parade down Green Street was to have begun at 10:00 from First Baptist Church but was called off because of lightning. (See separate story.)

However, the Northeast Georgia History went ahead with its open house with weapons and equipment from World War 11 on display and visitors holding umbrellas viewed the names of armed service members etched in stone in the Freedom Garden.

The local Vietnam vets chapter held its free downtown hot dog/hamburger cookout at the Hall County Courthouse and announced plans for a Memorial Day service at a later date.

The 11:00 special observance at Memorial Park Cemetery went ahead as planned although it was been moved indoors. (See separate story.) And, the patriotic concert is still on for 7:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church on Green Street.
