GAINESVILLE - They haven't gotten the call yet, but a Georgia National Guard spokesman says they'll be ready to go to the U.S.-Mexico border should they be summoned.
Lt. Col. Ken Baldowski, spokesman for the Georgia Department of Defense, appearing on The Local Hour on WDUN NEWS TALK 550, says a trip to the border wouldn't be anything new for these citizen-soldiers, noting that about 200 of them were deployed their two years ago.
President Barack Obama announced last week that he will send 1,200 National Guard troops to the border in order to stop immigrants from illegally entering the county.
Many Georgia national guardsmen - a large number from northeast Georgia - are just back from a year's deployment to Afghanistan.
