Two Gainesville men remember Art Linkletter

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
GAINESVILLE - Two Gainesville men reminisced Thursday about their brief associations with Art Linkletter who died Wednesday.

Ed Jared remembers when Linkletter came to town to help open a new poultry firm, Harrell Farms. Jared worked for the parent company, Wilson-Harrell and Company, and Linkletter was on its board of directors.

"He was a very, very gracious person," Jared said, "very personable, very nice to be around and he enjoyed our association very much."

Architect Garland Reynolds was president of the Gainesville Kiwanis Club in 1970 when Linkletter spoke at the club's annual meeting... and remembers his quick wit.

Reynolds says when he told Linkletter he was an architect, he quickly replied that "he knew about architects because one of his best friends was an architect in Los Angeles. He was an incredible fellow."

Art Linkletter was was best known for the television shows "Art Linkletter's House Party" and "People Are Funny" and the best-selling book "Kids Say the Darndest Things" which was based on a popular "House Party" feature.

He was 97.
