FBCC decides to hold mayoral election Nov. 2

By Ken Stanford, Marc Eggers
FLOWERY BRANCH - The Flowery Branch City Council has decided to hold the
special mayoral election Nov. 2 in conjunction with the statewide General
Election.

The council met Wednesday morning for the first time since Mayor Diane
Hirling announced on Monday that she is resigning, effective Monday, because
she and her husband are retiring and moving to Florida.

The council is already one member short because of the resignation of Craig
Lutz, who is running for a seat on the Hall County Board of Commissioners
and councilman Mike Miller is set to become mayor pro-tem Tuesday and he
said Wednesday morning he plans to seek the mayor's post in the November
election.

However, he will not have to resign his council seat until he had qualified
to run for mayor and he can't do that until September 27-29. By then, a new
council member should be in office, meaning that even with his resignation,
the council will have a quorum and be able to conduct official business.

There was discussion Wednesday morning about the possibility that the
council would be left without a quorum and therefore unable to carry out
official functions should one of its member choose to run in the mayoral
election had it been planned for September, as well. But, with the decision
to hold the mayoral election Nov. 2, that became a moot point.

A called council meeting that was to be held Thursday night to further sort
out the city's options has not been cancelled in light of the outcome of
Wednesday's meeting.
