Qualifying ends for Jul. 20 primaries

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
GAINESVILLE - Only three Hall County offices will be contested in the July 20th primaries... and a candidate who said he was withdrawing from one of the races just hours after qualifying Monday -- is back in it.

Qualifying closed at noon Friday with contested races for two seats on the county commission and one board of education post.

One of those contested commission posts is now held by Bobby Banks. Banks has qualified for re-election and will be challenged in the Republican Primary by Robert Kim Senter and Craig Lutz.

And, Democrat Paul Wayne Godfrey is back in the race. Godfrey was first to qualify for the race Monday morning but a few hours later announced his intention to withdraw because an attorney for the Technical College System of Georgia reportedly told him he would be in violation of the Hatch Act if he ran. That law prohibits participation in partisan elections by individuals whose employment is dependant in part or in whole on federal funds. Godfrey is employed by Lanier Technical College.

There are a number of contested state legislative races as well as the 7th, 9th, and 10th district congressional elections; each of those districts include parts of northeast Georgia.
