By B.J. Williams
GAINESVILLE - Three people are in jail after an attempted armed robbery in downtown Gainesville Tuesday morning.

Gainesville Police Lt. Carol Martin said one suspect approached taxi cab driver Antonio Zavala in the parking lot next to the Georgia Mountains Center around 5 a.m. and pointed a gun at him, demanding money.

"He was hit on the side of the head with the handgun and had a small cut, so a med unit came and treated him and released him on the scene," said Martin.

She said another cab driver came to Zavala's aid. That's when the suspect fled to a waiting vehicle.

With the help of witnesses, Martin said authorities found three suspects, arrested them and charged them with the attempted armed robbery.
