BRASELTON - Braselton has received a $16,300 grant from the Georgia Department of Transportation grant to help improve one of the main entrances into the city.
The money is a Georgia Transportation Enhancement (GATEway) Grant and will be use for plant and shrub/tree landscaping on the north side exit ramps of Interstate 85 at State Route 53.
The work will be done next spring.
The grants are reviewed by the Department's Roadside Enhancement and Beautification Council (REBC), composed of representatives from conservation groups and members of the Outdoor Advertising Association. Revenue from Outdoor Advertising Vegetation Management Permits funds the grants to mitigate the effects of tree/vegetation removal in front of billboard signs on highway rights of way.
Georgia DOT Commissioner Vance C. Smith, Jr., said that "A primary goal of the GATEway Grant program is to fund enduring enhancement of the roadsides for the traveling public, and the community's solid plans for continued, quality maintenance of their beautification project was key in being chosen to receive the GATEway grant funds. We appreciate the knowledge, skill and recommendations of the REBC members in this grant process."
Smith described the project as a "fine example" of beautifying Georgia's public right of way and lauded local government leaders for their "enthusiastic participation" in the program.
The Town of Braselton's project is one of 22 granted to local governments in 2009 across the state for GATEway projects, totaling $928,608.
Oakwood announced Friday it had received one of the grants. (See separate story.)
