Plans for curbside garbage pickup on hold

GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville City Council is putting on hold plans to convert from backyard to curbside pickup at homes in the city.

The city will conduct an eight-week pilot program starting April 19 which will involve one-day-a-week backyard pickup.

"It's a big difference," said Mayor Ruth Bruner. "Before we were looking to got once-a-week curbside pickup with the large 96-gallon containers. This a proposal to back up and let's look at a pilot project."

City officials had been under fire in recent weeks since first proposing that service be cut back to one-day-a-week, from two, and that all pickup be curbside, using containers that the city would furnish.

But Bruner said they are responding to the public's complaints.

"We've heard from so many people that don't want to change, yet we don't have the money to keep going the same way we've been going for all these years. Things have just come to an end of being able to supplement that program to make it work."

After the eight-week program, the Solid Waste Department will look at the results and see what changes need to be made.

Bruner said there will be two public meetings to review the proposals. Those meetings are tentatively set for July 15 and 22.

ALCOHOL LICENSE DENIED

The council also denied an appeal for an alcoholic beverage license to a convenience store in the city.

Hee K. Lee said she is now the operator of Glory Light Company on Monroe Drive, and she said the three prior charges of selling alcohol to a minor happened when her husband ran the store.

Lee tried to get the beverage license restored last year, but was told that her relationship to her husband would keep her from obtaining it.

So Lee said now she's getting a divorce, and she needs the license to keep the store profitable.

Lee's husband was in attendance at the hearing.

The Council denied the request, saying breaking the law three times is enough.
