GAINESVILLE - Kevin Clifford lined a two-run double with one out in the bottom of the seventh to rally Chestatee past Riverside Military Academy 8-7 Friday in baseball action.
The War Eagles (3-0) had just four hits in the game but took advantage of several walks in the final inning to set up the game-winning hit.
Riverside (2-2) jumped on Chestatee for two runs off Clifford, who went five innings allowing six runs while striking out eight, in the first inning. But the War Eagles responded with five runs in the second inning off Riverside starter Seth Settlemeyer, who went 6 1/3 innings allowing six runs with eight strikeouts as well.
Riverside rallied to tie the game at 5 in the third inning but Chestatee responded with a run in the fourth for a 6-5 lead. The Eagles then scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to reclaim the lead 7-6.
Riverside was poised to add to its lead in the seventh but Holden Gooch, who earned the win, pitched out of a one-out jam to keep the War Eagles in the game.
Clifford finished with two hits to go with the two RBI to lead Chestatee at the plate. Corbin Smith and Scott Chewning had one hit each for the Eagles. Rafael Mendoza had one RBI and Chewning scored two runs for the War Eagles.
Brian Cox led Riverside at the plate with two hits, including a solo home run, and scored twice. Michael Crespo had two hits for the Eagles as well.
