Immigration law protested in Gwinnett

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
LAWRENCEVILLE - Four immigrant students - protesting a federal immigration detention law which is enforced by local authorities in Hall, Gwinnett, Cobb and Whitfield counties - stopped at the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office Wednesday.

The four - three of them undocumented - are protesting the law by walking 1,500 miles from Miami to Washington, D.C.

Channel 2 Action News reports that their hoped-for meeting with Sheriff Butch Conway did not happen. They were told Conway was not in his office Wednesday. In the past, Conway has defended the program, saying it only targets people already in jail and that he is only enforcing the law.

The protesters said the law "criminalizes" people like them.
