CUMMING -- The Gainesville boys basketball team was 2-6 at one point this season. Now, the Red Elephants are one win removed from a state tournament berth.
Gainesville defeated West Forsyth 52-43 on Tuesday night in Cumming to seal the top seed from Region 7B-AAA, earning a first-round bye in next week's Region 7-AAA tournament. It was the Red Elephants' sixth straight win.
A victory on Feb. 17 at home in the second round of the region tourney would seal a spot in the Class AAA postseason. The Red Elephants will play host to the winner of the fourth seed from subregion A vs. the fifth seed from subregion B.
Facing a week that features three straight games (thanks to inclement weather make-ups), the Red Elephants started off on the right foot.
Blake Sims paced Gainesville (13-8, 9-2 Region 7B-AAA) with 16 points, while A.J. Johnson added 13. Chris West also scored nine.
Fineto Lunguana led West Forsyth with 15 points and Shaeem McLaren added 12.
Gainesville trailed 18-11 after the first eight minutes but outscored West Forsyth 41-25 the rest of the way.
The Red Elephants take on Franklin County on Wednesday in Gainesville.
