Icy bridges play havoc with morning commute

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
GAINESVILLE - No major injuries were reported in a rash of weather-related accidents around Gainesville Monday morning... caused by icy bridges.

As a blanket of fog settled over the area during the early morning hours and with temperatures below freezing, some bridges and overpasses quickly froze-over.

The 985 bridge at Queen City Parkway was one of the major problem areas. Three seperate wrecks were reported there within about 10 minutes around 7:00.

Hall County sheriff's deputies, the Georgia State patrol and state Department of Transportation had a number of other problem areas to deal with, as well as drivers hit the skids all morning long.

The northbound lanes of the Queen City Parkway bridge were closed for about one-and-a-half hours.

DOT crews were also called out to the Atlanta Highway bridge near Chicopee which was also icy. One witness reports that one car skidded and hit a guardrail at that location.
