Getting ready for New Year's Eve

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
UNDATED - Looking for a way to ring in the New Year away from the hustle-and-bustle of big city crowds? Well, there are plenty of alternatives in the Gainesville area.

How about Cornelia's 7th Annual Big Red Apple Drop? Or Gainesville's 3rd Annual Chicken Drop?

Cornelia's Big Red Apple Drop will held at midnight New Year's Eve at the South Habersham Sixth Grade Academy Gymnasium with festivities beginning at 10:00 Saturday night. It's family-oriented and free although a donation of canned fruit for the soup kitchen in Habersham County is requested.

Gainesville's Chicken Drop will be staged at the Gainesville Civic Center and will start at 8:30 with a dance with music provided by JB Jams. Also included: a balloon drop for cash and prizes, a cash bar, door prizes and raffles, a champagne toast at midnight and a breakfast buffet.

The price? $55 per individual, $100 per couple, $425 guarantee table for eight together, for $500 VIP table with two bottles of champagne.

The event benefits the Humane Society of Hall County.

Strictly for kids, the Interactive Neighborhood for Kids, or INK, will celebrate the coming new year Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. with its annual New Year's Eve Celebration featuring crafts and a parade through the museum. In addition, Jeff McClure will be here to entertain us with a magic show at 12:30. Papa Johns will also be providing free pizza, while supplies last. It's all free with paid admission to INK.
