Giant Eagle files federal egg price-fixing lawsuit

By The Associated Press
PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh-based Giant Eagle supermarket chain has filed a federal lawsuit alleging price-fixing by the United Egg Producers, Inc. and major suppliers and trade organizations affiliated with the group.

The suit says the Alpharetta, Ga.-based umbrella group, two trade associations and 18 suppliers conspired to drive up the price of eggs by reducing the number of egg-producing hens. The lawsuit filed Friday in Pittsburgh says the suppliers did everything from agreeing not to expand some egg-laying operations to manipulating the molting of hens to ``keep egg production low.''

The group's president and CEO didn't immediately respond to an e-mail, and a spokesman didn't immediately return a call for comment Monday.

The suit says Giant Eagle bought $69 million worth of eggs from 2006 to 2009.
