Operation Zero Tolerance kicking off

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
GAINESVILLE - Christmas and New Year's are just around the corner and the Gainesville Police Department along with law enforcement agencies all over the country are launching Operation Zero Tolerance Saturday.

The campaign - aimed at keeping speeds down, enforcing seat belt laws, and reducing the number of impaired drivers - will continue through January 4, according to Sgt. Dale Cash of the Gainesville Police Department. But, the main focus is on impaired drivers and to encourage the use of designated drivers anytime there maybe a potential for attending events where alcoholic beverages may be consumed.

Sgt. Cash said any number of tactics will be employed over the two-week period to accomplish the goals of Operation Zero Tolerance. He said they included increased use of checkpoints, concentrated patrols and radar, and at any time of day or night.

What the department will be doing between now and January 4 is really not anything new, Cash said, adding, these are things officers concentrate on and the tools they use in their work year round, they just publicize them more during special campaigns like this one.
