GAINESVILLE - The recent spell of cold weather has brought a noticeable increase in the number of requests for overnight shelter according to Lieutenant Matt Cunningham of the Gainesville Salvation Army on Dorsey Street.
"People want to know when we open, if we have shelter. Last night we were full; there was no availability," Cunningham affirmed.
"Some of the callers tell us they have spoken with Set Fee, the Baptist Mission, and Good News. All the shelters in town are getting calls."
When asked what criteria they use at the Salvation Army for admitting those in need, Cunningham simply stated, "For cold weather it's different. If you're on the street and you're cold - that's the criteria we use for cold-weather shelter."
Cunningham went on to explain that Monday night all 39 sleeping accomodations they have on-site were taken, as well as a few individuals sleeping on couches and the floor.
Everyone is required to vacate the premises each morning after 8AM.
Individuals or organizations interested in helping meet the needs brought on by the winter weather can contact the Gainesville Salvation Army at (770)534-7589.
