More changes proposed for stalled Oakwood development

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
GAINESVILLE - More and smaller apartments are proposed for a 65-acre tract in Mundy Mill Development in Oakwood.

That's the huge mixed-use development planned on both sides of Mundy Mill Road between McEver and Old Flowery Branch roads which has been in limbo since the real estate bust.

A proposed zoning amendment would allow the apartments on sections of the development zoned for condominiums or town homes.

In addition, the applicant, Butler Property, LLC, wants to lower the minimum size of each apartment from 775 square feet to to 500 square feet.

The Gainesville Planning and Appeals Board is scheduled to consider the changes next month.

Until the bottom fell out of the the housing market, Mundy Mill Development was envisioned as a huge multi-use residential/commercial development consisting of more than 2,000 housing units, including single-family homes, condominiums, and apartments, as well as a tract also set aside for an elementary school.

Some homes were built before the slowdown but most of the land has remained undeveloped.

The last set of changes to the development were approved by the Gainesville City Council in April. (See earlier story.)
