Honoring Our Veterans

November 11th is Veterans Day, and on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month there will be a ceremony in downtown Gainesville honoring all of the men and women who have served, or are serving, in American military forces. The ceremony will be coordinated by the Paul E. Bolding Post 7 of the American Legion. And in many of our schools some 50 veterans will be talking with students about the tradition and importance of patriotism in our American way of life.

This program is coordinated by the Northeast Georgia History Center, which has a magnificent military display at its museum. The 11-11-11 program is not new, but was once known by another name. You see, the Armistice ending World One was signed on 11-11-11 in 1918. It was called the "war to end all wars" and was originally titled "Armistice Day". But the nature of man had not changed from causing wars and rumors of wars, so America was soon involved in World War II, and Korea, and Vietnam and the middle East. Then we added another "eleven" to our patriotic vocabulary
