TRENTON, NJ - Ryan Garbutt scored two goals but the Gladiators fell in the first of a three game trip Thursday night, 3-2 in a shootout to the Trenton Devils.
The Gladiators (3-0-2) trailed 2-1 going into the final 20 minutes, but Garbutt beat goaltender Dave Caruso with a wrister from the high slot for his fourth goal of the season to tie the game at the 2:45 mark.
Trenton (2-3-0) had several chances late in the third on a two-man advantage, but Gladiators goalie Billy Sauer made some spectacular saves to keep the game tied. Sauer stopped 34 of 36 shots in his second start of the season.
In the shootout Ryan Hayes and Darcy Zajac were able to beat Sauer, while four Gladiators were turned away by Caruso. Gwinnett is now 0-for-8 on shootout tries this season.
Their only other loss came in a 3-2 shootout defeat to Florida in the opening game of the season.
Ryan Garbutt opened the scoring late in the first, burying a bouncing rebound at the top of the crease for his third goal of the season at the 18:27 mark.
Trenton came right back less then a minute later, as a T.J. Miller shot from the blueline made it through a screen and beat Billy Sauer to the far side to bring Trenton even through 20 minutes.
Just 17 seconds into the second period Darcy Zajac hammered home a fantastic centering pass from Ryan Ginand to give Trenton a 2-1 lead heading into the third before Gwinnett eventually tied it up.
