Move into new public safety building beginning

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville Police Department begins moving into the new public safety building Thursday and the fire department won't be far behind.

Chief Jon Canada says after 30-plus years in the same location, getting ready for the move is a "big job. He says there is a lot to go through and pack up and "get rid of," in some cases.

Canada says his department will have about four times the amount of space - including equipment bays - it now occupies in the public safety building on Jessee Jewell Parkway.

The police department's "front office operations" in the old facility will close Thursday and Friday as part of police department's plan to re-open in the new building Monday. No police reports or records will be issued on these days.

The department is open on Jesse Jewell today but alcohol employee work permits are not being issued.

Municipal Court will also be moving into the new complex, and Judge Hammond Law says he expects to begin using his new court facilities in a few weeks.

The city council will begin holding its meetings there in January.

The current public safety building will be torn down to help make room for a high-rise office/hotel complex on Jewell across from City Hall as well as a pedestrian bridge which will connect downtown with midtown.
