Auto break-ins a continuing problem

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
GAINESVILLE - Gainesville police report a continuing problem with vehicle break-ins and are again appealing to the public to help curtail the crimes.

Officers say that in well over half the recent entering auto cases they investigated, the victims left their vehicles unlocked --- with valuable items in plain view. In August, the department reported that such crimes were at an all-time high. (See earlier story.)

Spokesman Kevin Holbrook said "This is what we call a crime of opportunity. It is very easy for someone to simply open the door, or reach through a window to gain access to your vehicle. This takes nearly no time at all."

Holbrook also said "Please be vigilant and do not become complacent. Be on the lookout for any suspicious subjects or vehicles in the area. If you notice such subjects please contact Hall County Central Communications. It is very important that citizens be the eyes and ears of the police department."

The police department Tuesday issued a number of hints that would lessen your chances of becoming a victim:

1) Lock your car and make sure all windows are up and secure.
2) Don't leave packages or valuables in plain view. Take valuables with you or hide under seat or place in trunk. This is especially true for GPS units, purses, cd's, I pods and other electronic devices.
3) Whenever possible park in a well lighted and busy area.
4) Purchase auto theft system and use it accordingly.

Any suspicious activity should be reported to Hall County Central Communications (770)-534-5251.
