LITHONIA - A Lithonia police officer shot and wounded a man accused of opening fire during a traffic stop.
Authorities said the shootout happened late Monday night when an officer pulled over a silver Chevrolet with a temporary license plate.
Lithonia police Sgt. Mike Williams told WSB-TV that as the officer walked toward the car, a passenger jumped out with a gun and started shooting. The officer fired back, wounding the passenger.
The police officer was not injured.
The wounded man was listed in stable condition at Grady Memorial Hospital and will be charged with aggravated assault on a police officer. His name was not immediately released.
The driver of the car has not been charged.
