Gainesville bomb scare investigation closed

GAINESVILLE - The investigation into a bomb scare in downtown Gainesville Wednesday afternoon has been closed.

Gainesville Police spokesman Kevin Holbrook said the ammunition canister that was left on Broad Street around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday was left there accidentally by the owner.

"He was there at a local gun shop and when he went back to his vehicle, he had set that item down and then simply drove off and left the item there," he said.

Holbrook said the man will not be charged in the incident.

Although several nearby businesses were evacuated and streets were shut down, Holbrook said officers did the right thing by taking precautions when the suspicious package was reported.
