GAINESVILLE -Work on the Dawsonville Highway bridge at the Hall-Forsyth county line is running slightly ahead of schedule and as a result, motorists are getting a "Friday night reprieve."
The Georgia Department of Transportation said Thursday the weekend closure of the bridge will not begin this week until Saturday morning at 8:00 and will continue around the clock to 5:00 Monday.
"The maintenance work is slightly ahead of schedule," explained Randall Davis, DOT District Construction Engineer. "This weekend crews will finish heat straightening sections of the damaged sway bracing. The contractor can't begin the next phase of work until next weekend. So there is a reprieve Friday night. The next phase of work is to remove the concrete approach slabs on each end of the bridge and repour them with new concrete."
This is the fourth of eight weekends of maintenance work on the bridge.
If weather permits, weekend work will resume this Saturday, October 9 at 8 a.m. and continue through 5 a.m. Monday, October 11. The bridge will be closed to all traffic while work occurs.
Massana Construction of Tyrone is repairing damaged horizontal trusses, bridge joints, and removing then replacing the concrete approach slabs to the bridge. The new approach slabs will be lowered approximately 5 inches. The work is scheduled to be finished November 30.
