Environmental justice conference starts Thursday

GAINESVILLE - A three-day environmental justice conference begins in Gainesville Thursday. Hosted by the Newtown Florist Club, it will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn.

A highlight of the conference will be a report on a "case study": the club's 30-year fight to remove a scrapyard from the Newtown neighborhood. Also, the club's approach in dealing with a number of enviornemntal issues in the Newtown section of Gainesville.

The keynote speaker, who will address the conference at noon Thursday, will be Dr. Darrell Rogers, Associate Director, Community Environmental Health, Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, CDC.
