Fundraiser for people caring for abused animals

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
TOCCOA - A weekend fundraiser in Toccoa raked in cash, supplies and equipment for around 80 abused animals that were found on a Habersham County farm last month.

Tractor Supply in Toccoa held the two-day fundraiser.

Vicki Lacey, an employee of the store, help coordinate it.

"People don't understand that the ones who 'foster' these horses, have to feed them out of their own pocket," Lacey said. "They get no reimbursement from the state or the county - they're doing it out of the goodness of their heart."

Habersham County animal control and an animal rescue group confiscated the 38 or so horses, two donkeys and a mule from James Goss' Clarkesville farm. Goss maintains in an interview with WYFF-TV in Greenville, South Carolina, that he did nothing wrong.

"If I'm doing wrong," Goss told the TV station, "I need somebody that will teach me - show me something - I am more than will to learn."

Some of the horses were so thin that their ribs and spines were showing.

Goss, meanwhile, is awaiting a court date on 80 charges of animal cruelty.
