No. 2 Lincoln County avoids upset bid by Commerce

By staff reports
COMMERCE - For two-and-a-half quarters Commerce was poised to pull off the biggest upset in Class A so far in 2009.

The Tigers led No. 2 Lincoln County 12-7 and had the ball ready to add on to their lead.

But the Red Devils' Franklin Sherman took matters into his own hands engineering two late drives to rally Lincoln County to 20-12 win.

Sherman connected with Devonte Wright on a 6-yard scoring pass and then capped a 19-play, 93-yard drive with a 3-yard run with just over five minutes left in the game to seal the win.

After Lincoln County (3-1) took the lead on a Garrett Mohr touchdown run, Commerce (1-3) pulled within 7-6 just before halftime on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Cody Streetman to Carl Allen. The Tigers took a 12-7 lead in the third quarter on a 15-yard scoring run from Deon Brock.

But the Tigers could not hold the lead as A.G. MIddleton, the nephew of former Georgia Bulldog Garrison Hearst, did the bulk of the heavy-lifting for Lincoln County with 65 yards rushing and 49 yards receiving, mostly in the second half, to spark the Red Devils offense.

The Tigers' rough schedule continues as they play host to Athens Academy (3-1) next week before traveling to Athens Christian (3-2) and then No. 1-ranked Wesleyan (5-0) in three weeks.
