COZAD, Neb. - Tenneco says it will be closing its plant in Cozad, Nebraska, and moving part of the production there to Hartwell, Georgia.

Closing the Nebraska will mean eliminating about 500 jobs by the end of next year.

Tenneco said Tuesday that the production of shock absorbers and other ride-control gear will be moved to plants in Hartwell; Paragould, Ark.; and Celaya, Mexico.

Tenneco chairman and CEO Gregg Sherrill says the company regretted the closure but he thinks the production consolidation is necessary to strengthen Tenneco's long-term competitiveness.

He says the Cozad workers will be getting outplacement help.

Tenneco is based in Lake Forest, Ill.

In January, the company delayed a closure decision amid the economic uncertainty in the country and the automobile industry.
