ATLANTA - The number of payroll jobs in Georgia in August decreased 238,200, or 5.8 percent, from August of 2008.
The Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) says the over-the-year losses came in trade, transportation and warehousing, manufacturing, professional and business services, including temporary employment agencies, and construction. On a positive note, healthcare and private educational services showed a combined increase of 13,400 jobs.
Leading the way was Dalton, which saw a 7.8 percent decline in the number of jobs during the period. The best record of any of the state's 14 metro areas was Athens, where the decline was 1.8 percent. Gainesville was fourth on the list... losing 3,500 jobs - a decline of 4.5 percent.
