ATHENS - Clarke Central quarterback Martay Mattox accounted for nearly 300 yards of offense to lead the Class AAAA 10th-ranked Gladiators to a 23-7 win over Habersham Central Friday in Region 8-AAAA action.
The Gladiators (3-0, 3-0 in region) controlled the game holding the ball for 31:06 to Habersham's 16:54 for the game. Clarke Central had 355 yards of total offense to the Raiders' 191 for the game.
Mattox was 12-of-18 passing for 180 yards and two touchdowns and added another 89 yards on the ground.
Clarke Central jumped out to a quick 16-0 lead in the first quarter before Habersham was able to cut the lead to 16-7 midway through the second quarter on a 40-yard touchdown run by David Griffin. The Gladiators pushed their lead to 23-7 by halftime and the both defenses took over in the second half as neither team could score the rest of the way.
Kevin Ellison led Habersham (1-2, 1-2) with 62 yards rushing.
