23 city school students opt out of Obama speech

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
GAINESVILLE - Gainesville school officials say they had 23 students out of around 6,500 systemwide who opted out of the president's speech that targeted the classroom.

"These students were at GHS, GMS, Centennial, and Enota," Superintendent Merrianne Dyer said. "Six were high school students who either asked to do something else and/or their parents had requested they not view the speech."

Dyer said Wednesday morning most were "sibling groups" from the same families, and it appears "eight or nine" families chose for their children not to view the speech.

"The speech was recorded," she added, "so that parents could come in and view it if they wish."

Dr. Dyer also said "there were no parental concerns voiced after the speech yesterday (Tuesday)."

No figures were available from Hall County schools.
