Shaw Industries closing Ringgold plant, cutting 430 jobs

By The Associated Press
RINGGOLD - Shaw Industries has announced it will close a Ringgold yarn plant in the coming weeks, leading to the loss of 430 jobs.

The company released a statement Tuesday saying affected employees at Plant DX will have preference for openings at other plants.

It blamed the closure on declining demand due to the housing slump.
Spokesman Al Scruggs said Shaw will operate using spun yarn from plants in Valley Head, Ala., as well as Tifton and Chatsworth.

The company closed a spinning mill in Stevenson, Ala., in June 2008, followed by a similar mill in Trenton in November.

In March, Shaw closed a plant in Calhoun for a total of 1,710 jobs lost in the Tri-State area. A plant in Valdosta, Ga. was also closed that month.
