CUMMING - The deputy who shot and killed a suspected bank robber near Cumming Monday is a seven-year veteran of the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office.
Sgt. William Brent Weeks, 32, has been employed by the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office since 2002. He works in the Uniform Patrol Division of the agency and is assigned to the South Precinct as a supervisor.
Sgt. Weeks spotted the vehicle being driven by the bank robbery suspect, James M. Kenny, around 1:10 p.m. Monday after the Wachovia Bank on Bethelview Road had been held up ten minutes earlier.
Authorities say Kenny drove his white work van into the parking lot of a convenience store on Georgia Highway 9, with Sgt. Weeks following behind him. Kenny exited his van, they said, with what appeared to be a handgun. Sgt. Weeks ordered Kenny to drop the weapon and Kenny did not obey. Shots were then fired.
Kenny was pronounced dead at the scene. Sgt. Weeks was not injured.
Sgt. Weeks has been placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of an investigation. This is standard procedure, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings, and the GBI has been asked to investigate, which is also standard procedure.
Sheriff Paxton added that evidence was located in the van linking Kenny to the bank robbery including an undisclosed amount of cash.
