New 985 exit ramp opens

GAINESVILLE - The new northbound exit ramp at Atlanta Highway - a part of the reconstruction of Exit 16 in Oakwood - was opened to traffic Tuesday.

Georgia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Teri Pope says 985 northbound traffic was also shifted back its original lanes.

Traffic was moved over in October so that crews could rebuild the interstate bridge over Mundy Mill Road.

Tuesday's changes were not without traffic delays, however, as motorists began reporting huge traffic jams on 985 in the late morning but by 1:00 Pope reported that the new ramp was completely open. One lane had been opened about 11:15 but the other remained closed so that crews could finish with striping and other pavement markings.
